SU’s COVID-19 Testing Protocols

By Lindsey Fine
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University began enforcing school-wide COVID-19 testing in August and has continued and changed the program throughout the year.

In the fall semester, students only got tested when instructed and used a swab-style test to deposit their samples, which were processed at the nearby upstate medical university.

“Last semester it was like you had no idea when you were getting it back it could be a week, or two weeks, but this semester it’s a lot better,” freshman Sean Maddock said.

Since students did not get their test results back fast enough in the fall semester, S.U. changed to the Yale University School of Public Heath’s SalivaDirect method and began processing the tests in a lab on SU’s campus.

“It’s a lot faster this semester, I usually get my test results back in a day,” freshman Angela Giordano.

S.U also made and enforced a weekly testing requirement for all students accessing university buildings this semester, and later added a second mandatory weekly test for students living in north campus dorms

The university has not released information about what the COVID-19 testing requirements will be for next school year, but  said they will be releasing the information soon
