The Schine Student Center Reopens

Louise Rath, SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ever since Syracuse University’s newly renovated Schine Student Center reopened last week, students have been flocking to the building and raising concerns about the spread of COVID-19.

The new Schine dining center is especially raising concerns over long lines and crowded seating areas.

“I hate standing in line, everybody’s a little too close, but the food is awesome. Honestly the only problem I have is that there’s no seating. There’s nowhere to sit, there’s nowhere to eat, not even downstairs,” sophomore Xander Caulfield said.

It’s no surprise that students are crowding the new building after 18 months of waiting for it to reopen.

Along with the dining center, the renovations include a brand-new campus store, Panasci study lounge, a number of spaces for student organizations to gather, and the event space known as “The Underground.”

Half of Syracuse University’s undergraduates had never been in Schine Student Center until last week due to the extensive renovations and were excited to finally see the building.

“I was a freshman when Schine was first under construction, so I didn’t know what it looked like before. But I think so far, it was definitely worth the wait,” sophomore Jordan Darian said.

The location of the Schine student center also makes it a hub for student activity.

The building sits at the heart of SU’s campus, steps from the Hall of Languages and Einhorn Family Walk.

The student center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends
