WICE drops its second game to Bemidji State

By Luke McGrath SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Orange came into Saturday’s contest with the hopes of outperforming its showing Friday night, a 2-1 loss.

It did not accomplish that in the sense that it was shut out, however, it did fire 28 shots, compared to Friday nights 12.

Syracuse played a much more physical game Saturday, but still could not break through on the scoreboard. Bemidji State goaltender Erin Deters denied any threat the Orange offense posed.

Eventually, the Beavers broke through. Emily Bergland broke the ice by scoring a 4 on 4 goal just under five minutes into the second period.

In the third period, Bemidji State scored its second and third goals within nine seconds of each other. Senior forward Lauren Miller scored the second, and junior defender Alexis Joyce scored the third.

The number one story of the weekend was the officials.

In the first game of the series, there were a total of 14 penalties. In the second, there were a total of 19.

“It’s definitely not ideal,” junior forward Stephanie Grossi said. “You’re either penalty killing or power playing and it’s very hard to get a flow with your lines.”

“It’s very disruptive,” head coach Paul Flanagan said. “It’s been consistent for three nights now with different referees and they’re calling everything single thing that they see. But then again they’ll miss a body check, but they’ll call some minor stuff. So I think it’s very very frustrating. You can probably sense it from me. But it’s frustrating for the players, there’s no flow of the game and it gets pretty ugly after a while.”

The Orange offense has 13 days to get back on track before traveling to Boston to take on Northeastern on October 14th.
