Stabbed Pit Bull ‘Chance’ Recovering at Syracuse Shelter After Near-Fatal Attack
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (CITRUSTV NEWS) — A pit bull found stabbed and left for dead on a Syracuse street is recovering at a local animal shelter, prompting an outpouring of community support and renewed concerns about animal cruelty.
The dog, now named Chance, was discovered near East Willow St more than a week ago with a stab wound to his left jugular vein, according to an urgent Facebook post by Humane CNY. Chance is now in the care of the shelter and is undergoing a process of healing and rehabilitation.
Executive director of Humane CNY Maureen Davison, said the case has resonated deeply with the Syracuse community and animal lovers across the region.
“I cannot believe he lived through it. I don’t know how he lasted…I think it was about maybe three hours from the time it happened to the time he actually had surgery and he was in pretty critical condition, ” said Davison.
The Facebook post detailing Chance’s condition drew hundreds of comments from residents expressing both outrage over the attack and support for the dog’s recovery, leading to an accumulation of donations in order to cover the dog’s medical bills.
Davison noted that shelters nationwide have seen an increase in animal neglect and violence, but emphasized that Humane CNY’s mission remains focused on serving the community and protecting animals in need.
“At the end of the day, we just focus on who we can help. What dog out there needs us the most,” said Davison.
Despite his traumatic ordeal, Chance is recovering with what shelter staff describe as “positive spirits.”
Humane CNY officials hope his story will inspire more people to support animals awaiting adoption. The organization accepts donations, foster families and adoptive homes for their dogs, and cats, through its website and social media channels.
