Student-Run Hotdog Stand Fosters SU Community
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Among the clothes, homework, and typical dorm items, Syracuse University (SU) freshman Michael Young uses his space for something you don’t typically see… a hotdog stand. For a three-dollar charge and a quick two-minute wait, you can get a fresh hotdog from “Mike’s Dogs.”
The idea stemmed from his love of hotdogs and his desire to share the enjoyment of simple, easy-to-eat food with others. Whether after a night out or a Syracuse football victory in the Dome, students can count on “Mike’s Dogs” for a quick snack, offering an alternative to university food,
“He’s selling things that we’ll actually eat. It’s different from the dining hall food,” said SU Freshman Ella Callahan.
The stand presents great opportunities for young people, creating both a flow of income and a sense of community,
“It’s definitely really wholesome. It’s pretty much what the college experience is about,” said SU Freshman Julia Livolsi.
Already making $300 in revenue, Young said he has made new friends and memories that continue to motivate him to keep the business going,
“As long as people want hotdogs, definitely [will run the business] through my freshman year if it’s still successful, and we will see come next year,” said Young.
Enjoying his side gig, Young continues to serve his classmates with hotdogs that are anything but underdog.
