SYRACUSE, N.Y. (CITRUSTV NEWS) — The Center for Disability and Inclusion has received a three-year, $750,000 grant to pilot a statewide network that helps families and self-advocates learn how to push for better access and inclusion. The program offers training, resources, and guidance for people navigating education, healthcare, and employment systems.

“I remember sitting on the school bus, sixth grade Nick wanted to go to college. And six or seven years later, I’m here and I made that dream a reality,” said Freshman Nick Sorrentino.

This grant gives an opportunity for people to have a stronger voice to make a difference.

“I think giving people with developmental disabilities a voice and an understanding that they have control over what is happening legislatively in New York State is so impactful” said Director of the new CDI Program Shana E Lewis.

The training through this new program isn’t just about policy, it’s personal. For students and families involved, it’s a chance to make sure every voice is heard.

“Families are a key role, we are our children’s first teachers, last teachers, intermediate teachers. In regards to really helping my son to advocate for services that he needs, visiting the disability studies office, they really need to be the ones advocating for themselves. I did a lot of the advocating, but when he turned twelve it was like nope you have to go to your meetings and learn how to advocate for yourself” said Syracuse University parent advocate Kristen O’Brien.

The Center says it hopes to expand the training across New York in the coming years, helping even more families become advocates for inclusion.
