Organizations at SU Celebrate Earth Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – This year’s Earth Day theme is “Restore our Earth.” Various clubs here at SU have done different things to celebrate Earth Day such as OxFam who held an Earth Day Panel. April 22 is the international holiday known as Earth Day. OxFam was one of the clubs that did tabeling and a panel for the holiday.
OxFam is a non-profit organization working to end the injustice of poverty on a global level.
Madeline Canelli, the President of the OxFam chapter here on campus, said that Earth Day is the most widely spread international holiday celebrated.
“That’s my favorite fact of the week,” Canelli said.
“The Restore our Earth” theme for the holiday has impacted Canelli in a positive way.
“I think it is important to not focus on the mistakes of the past,” Canelli said.
By working on improving the Earth, there is a chance for change.
Canelli and general body member, Regan Schutte, were just a few OxFam members who tabled on Tuesday, April 20 in Schine. The club had a planning meeting for Earth Day on Monday, April 19 in Lyman Hall.
Canelli and Schutte both tabled to get the word out about OxFam and Earth Day. They handed out flyers, bookmarks, and much more, with information about the Earth Day panel and about the organization.
Tabeling “was nerve racking” and “if someone is interested in OxFam, that is a good person who wants to help other people,” Schutte said.
Schutte also admitted that “Earth Day might have been something that I have overlooked in the past” and has been working at becoming more educated about the holiday.
The Earth Day panel was held on the holiday at 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with panelists discussing different topics about the Earth.
