SU Students Complete Housing Selection | News Live at 6

By Jake Morel

SYRACUSE, N.Y.– The beginning of this week marked an important time for Syracuse University freshman: housing selection.

The university’s housing policy requires students to live on campus for their first two years, so many sophomores live in dorms.

Students received a specific time this week and at that time, they select which room they want. Only one person per room has to select a room, so the more roommates students have, the higher chance they have of getting an earlier time.

“I think it’s pretty fair because the way the algorithm is set up is that if you sign up earlier, you get an earlier time slot,” SU freshman Jackie King said.

SU freshman Sean Dempsey was nervous about getting the room he wanted when he spoke with us before his housing selection time in the afternoon of the first day.

“ I’m pretty nervous, I’m hoping to get Haven, but our time is pretty good so I think we’ll be okay, but we’ll see what happens,” said Dempsey.

Dempsey and his roommates sat in the Newhouse School of Public Communications for two hours on the day of their selection discussing which rooms were still available. Once the housing portal opened up, they picked the room they wanted.

“We got Haven, so the one we wanted, and I’m very excited for next year,” Dempsey said..

On-campus housing selection will continue until Friday, April 1.
