(CitrusTV) – En un momento polémico entre México y los Estados Unidos, Diego Gómez-Pickering, El Embajador Extraordinario y Plenipotenciario de México, vino a la Universidad de Syracuse. Lo que quiere cumplir con su viaje fue simple: ayuda a los estudiantes de recordar la importancia de relaciones entre los dos países.

“La relación va mucho más allá de la migración o el sistema económico,” dijo Pickering. “Es una relación que lleva cientos de años, somos más que vecinos, somos familia.”    

Recientemente ha sido difícil a recordar esto. Animosidad entre los dos países creció en septiembre cuando Donald Trump anunció que el programa Consideración de Acción Deferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) habría acabado al 5 de marzo. El programa fue iniciado por presidente Obama en 2012 para proteger la gente que vino de México por maneras ilegales en la niñez. Ellos que benefician de este programa puede renovar estatus protegido cada dos años, hasta que puedan lograr ciudadanía.

Trump trató de terminar este programa y entonces dejó congreso a encontrar una manera de proteger ellos que permanecen aquí. Pero congreso no pude encontrar un pacto, y el corte supremo mandó al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de renovar los permisos de los soñadores.

Tensiones ampliaron por la semana pasada, Enrique Peña Nieto, el presidente de México, canceló un encuentro con presidente Trump en la Casa Blanca. Nieto lo hizo después de un argumento por telefónico sobre la muralla fronteriza, de acuerdo al diario Washington Post.

Inmigración no es el único problema. Trump impuse aranceles sobre acero y aluminio exterior. El los use para cambiar el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte. Por sus redes sociales Trump dijo que “Solo se sacarán los impresos en acero y aluminio si un acuerdo nuevo y justo está firmado.”

Los dos patrias faltan diplomacia hoy, e Pickering conté a los estudiantes de la escuela Maxwell en la universidad que este necesita cambiar. No porque es fácil, sino que no hay otra opción.

“Tu vecino no te gusta, puedes cambiar a otro lugar,” dijo Pickering. Pero en este caso, no es así. Estamos juntos en nuestros presentes y nuestros futuros.”

“The relationship between our two countries goes well beyond economics and immigration,” said Pickering. “This relationship spans hundreds of years, we are a family.”

Recently, this hasn’t seemed so. Animosity rose between the two countries in September, when Donald Trump announced his plans to terminate the Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program by March 5. President Obama initiated the program in 2012 to help provide protected legal status to Mexican-Americans brought over the border illegally as children. The intention of the program is to provide them the time necessary to gain full citizenship.

Trump’s attempt to end DACA has all but backfired as of now. Trump left Congress to hash out a new way for the “Dreamers” to stay in the U.S. but it was unable to make anything work. Then, the Supreme Court ruled that the “Dreamers” must be allowed to renew their protected status beyond the May 5 deadline imposed by Trump.

Tension continued to rise last week when Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto cancelled a trip to the White House for a meeting with Trump. Nieto called the meeting off after a heated phone conversation with Trump over the funding the U.S.-Mexico border wall, according to a report by the Washington Post.

This week problems arose outside of immigration when Trump imposed tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum. Trump made it clear through his social media that U.S. trade partners in the North American Free Trade Agreement are part of the reasons for the new tariffs. “Tariffs on steel and aluminum will only come off if (a) new and fair NAFTA agreement is signed,” said Trump via Twitter.

The lack of diplomacy between the two states at the moment moved Pickering to tell students at the Maxwell School that their generation has to help broker solutions. Not because he wants it to be so, rather there’s no way for these two countries to get around each other.

“If you don’t like your neighbor, you can move away,” said Pickering. “Not in this case though. We’re joined together in both the present and the future.”
