Syracuse Field Hockey 2025 Season Preview | Game-by-Game
By: Sydney Chan | @SydneyO_Chan
No. 11 Syracuse Field Hockey returns to the turf after wrapping up its 2024 campaign with a 13-7 record (4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) and punching its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year under Head Coach Lynn Farquhar, who continues her tenure in her third season with the Orange. SU has reached postseason play in 15 of the last 16 full seasons but faces no shortage of competition this year. The Cuse faces 16 regular-season opponents who combined for a 167-134 record in 2024, including nine preseason Top 20 teams and seven NCAA Tournament qualifiers, three of which were conference champions and four earned at-large bids. Playing nearly every Friday and Sunday until November, the Orange face a packed regular-season schedule.
August 29, 2025 | Syracuse vs. Lock Haven | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 4-15 (2-5 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference)
Syracuse begins its 2025 season the same way it did in 2024, by hosting Lock Haven at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Last year, the Orange had no trouble topping the Bald Eagles, with eight different goal scorers contributing to a 9-0 victory. “We have a really new group… 17 newcomers,” Head Coach Lynn Farquhar shared after SU’s 3-0 exhibition win last weekend. Friday’s contest marks the first official test for those freshmen and transfers in Orange.
August 31, 2025 | Syracuse vs. Fairfield | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 12-9 (6-2 Northeast Conference)
To round off opening weekend, SU hosts Northeast Conference Champion Fairfield, who also made an appearance in the first round of the 2024 NCAA tournament. The Stags are ranked at the top of the 2025 NEC field hockey preseason poll, returning this year with their four top goal-scorers — seniors Konni Hoffman (7g, 5a), Alice Pifferi (3g, 10a), Pilar Mengotti (5g, 5a), and Rylee LaLoup (7g, 0a) — but a new coach at the helm. Head Coach Laura Gebhart spent the past five seasons at Penn State University, serving as Associate Head Coach in 2023 and 2024, and headed the field hockey team at Bryant University the two seasons prior.
September 5, 2025 | Syracuse vs. No. 16 Rutgers (Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Challenge) | Buckeye Varsity Field
Record last season: 8-9 (4-4 Big Ten)
Then, it’s off to Columbus for a weekend competing in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, beginning with No. 16 Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights struggled more than expected last season, finishing with a .500 conference record compared to 2023’s 6-2 conference standing, and not making an NCAA Tournament bid. Still, RU retains a strong defensive core to the new season, its cage fiercely defended by Rutgers’ All-Time Leader in Defensive Saves (25 saves in 2024), Puck Winter. Winter also led the NCAA in Defensive Saves in 2024 (9) and 2023 (12).
September 7, 2025 | Syracuse @ No. 13 Ohio State (Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Challenge) | Buckeye Varsity Field
Record last season: 14-5 (4-4 Big Ten)
Two days later, SU plays challenge-host No. 13 Ohio State, who concluded last season ranked 12th in the national poll. Almost exactly a year prior to this contest, the Buckeyes earned a decisive 5-0 victory over the Orange at Coyne Stadium. After a quick goal off of a penalty corner less than a minute and a half into the game, Ohio State’s momentum continued to grow. This season, the Buckeyes welcome back Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year and Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) draftee Makenna Webster for her final year on the green.
September 12, 2025 | Syracuse @ No. 10 Princeton | Bedford Field
Record last season: 14-6 (7-0 Ivy League), NCAA Tournament Quarterfinalist
After a few days back in the 315 to reset, the Cuse heads back on the road, this time to New Jersey, to battle No. 10 Princeton. Last season, the Orange hosted the Tigers for a nail-biting matchup. SU’s Willemijn Boogert put the Cuse on the board in just the third minute of the contest, but after the Tigers struck back in the third, the pressure was on. But on its ninth and final penalty corner, the Orange ultimately converted when Lottie Summers delivered the ball to Annabelle Vossenaar for the stick stop at the top of the circle, setting up Bo van Kempen’s game-winning shot with just over five minutes left.
September 14, 2025 | Syracuse @ Lafayette | Rapolt Field
Record last season: 14-7 (5-1 Patriot League)
Next up is a trip to Pennsylvania to play Lafayette, a team the Cuse leads 13-5 all-time. The Leopards are the reigning 2024 Patriot League Field Hockey Champions — their 2-1 overtime victory over American secured their NCAA Tournament first-round contest versus Saint Joseph’s. Lafayette stayed competitive in that one, dropping a 1-0 final to the eventual 2024 NCAA Tournament runner-ups. Entering 2025, the Leopards sat atop the Patriot League preseason poll, with junior forward Stella Malinowski and senior goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni receiving Patriot League Preseason honors as Offensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively.
September 19, 2025 | Syracuse vs. No. 20 Wake Forest | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 7-11 (2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference)
Syracuse heads back to Coyne Stadium after two weekends away to begin conference play and hosts No. 20 Wake Forest. The Orange hold a narrow advantage over the Demon Deacons, with a 9-8 overall win-loss record. Last season, Wake Forest was led offensively by its underclassmen, with freshman Lauren Storey recording a team-high 17 points (7g, 3a), the second most among conference freshmen in 2024. Now a sophomore, Storey reconnects with junior Mia Schoenbeck, who earned her second consecutive Preseason All-ACC Field Hockey Team selection.
September 21, 2025 | Syracuse vs. No. 3 Virginia | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 14-5 (6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), NCAA Tournament Quarterfinalist
SU rounds off the weekend by hosting ACC-opponent No. 3 Virginia, who comes just behind North Carolina and Duke in the ACC Preseason Poll. The Cavaliers fell to the Orange 1-0 in the teams’ last matchup during the 2024 ACC Championship, but UVA won the teams’ 2024 regular season meeting 3-2, after a competitive 4-3 edge in shootouts. With returning talent and top freshman recruits in goalkeeper Soren Kipphut (2024 Women’s Development National Team – Indoor), midfielder Bella Moore (MAX Field Hockey Top 10, 2024 New Jersey Field Hockey Player of the Year), and forward Caroline Raynes (MAX Field Hockey Top 10, MAX Field Hockey Top Midfielder of Class), this game will be a solid midseason test for the Cuse.
September 26, 2025 | Syracuse vs. No. 5 Duke | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 13-7 (6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), NCAA Tournament Quarterfinalist
SU continues conference play by hosting No. 5 Duke, the 2024 national leader in shutouts last season with 12 in 20 games, including a divisive 1-0 win over the Cuse following a 3-1 shoot out victory. The Blue Devils also claimed second place in the ACC preseason poll ahead of the Cavs. Though Duke lost much of its starting lineup, including five of its top scorers, the team still returns some notable talent — including senior Alaina McVeigh, a two-time All-American and 2025 preseason All-ACC honoree — and welcomes some outstanding new freshman, including forward/midfielder Shae Wozniak (2024 Max Field Hockey National and Pennsylvania Player of the Year), forward/midfielder Lily Soldan (Michigan State Player of the Year and Midwest Region Player of the Year), and midfielder Sofia Fidalgo Schioppa (Connecticut Offensive Player of the Year). Plus, the Orange will see a familiar face in goal, as graduate transfer Brooke Borzymowski steps in to fill the big shoes left by Federique Wollerart.
This contest is also a special occasion as SU is set to retire the No. 5 jersey of National Champion and 2015 Honda Sports Award winner Alyssa Manley. Manley captained the Orange to their first NCAA Championship in 2015, marking the first national title for a women’s team in Syracuse University Athletics history. She went on to represent Team USA in numerous international competitions, including the 2016 Rio Olympics.
September 28, 2025 | Syracuse vs. No. 18 Penn State | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 9-7 (2-3 Big Ten)
Next, Syracuse hosts No. 18 Penn State. Despite trailing the all-time series 24-7-1, SU heads into this matchup with the momentum from the teams’ last contest, a 2-1 victory early last season. Penn State faced a tougher season last year, falling 2-1 to Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. With leading scorer Sophia Gladieux (20g, 4a) now graduated and the next highest scorer netting just three goals, the Nittany Lions could face an uphill battle this year — but time will tell.
October 3, 2025 | Syracuse vs. Colgate | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 4-13 (1-5 Patriot League)
Then, it’s time for a New York State showdown, when Colgate travels about an hour north to Coyne Stadium. The Orange controlled the last matchup against the Raiders, outshooting Colgate 33-2 with 21 on goal and a 15-1 edge in penalty corners, contributing to a final 3-0 score. After losing four seniors from the 2024 class, the Raiders welcome eight freshmen to their squad, under the leadership of a seasoned 10-player senior unit. Still, this matchup leans heavily in favor of the Cuse.
October 10, 2025 | Syracuse @ Stanford | Varsity Field Hockey Turf
Record last season: 8-9 (2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference)
After three more weekends at home, the Orange head to the airport to travel cross-coast for their first-ever ACC trip to California. SU opens this west coast battle at The Farm, to take on Stanford. The Cardinals’ first year in the ACC was definitely a big change, but Stanford did manage to close the regular season strong, with victories over Wake Forest and in-state rival California. Still, Syracuse dominates the all-time series 11-1. This is another game the Orange need to capitalize on after facing a gauntlet of highly ranked ACC opponents.
October 12, 2025 | Syracuse @ California | Underhill Field
Record last season: 7-10 (1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference)
Following, the Cuse takes a quick hour drive to Berkeley to play California. SU holds a 6-1 lead in the all-time series but can’t afford to take this game for granted — the teams’ last meeting was a narrow 2-1 overtime win at Coyne Stadium, and the Golden Bears led the nation in defensive saves last season, with 15. The Orange aim to return to the Salt City with two ACC wins before facing their toughest test yet.
October 17, 2025 | Syracuse vs. No. 2 North Carolina | J.S. Coyne Stadium
Record last season: 20-1 (8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), NCAA Tournament Semifinalist
For its final home game of the regular season, Syracuse hosts reigning ACC champion No. 2 North Carolina, who is fresh off a run to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals. After a shocking loss to Saint Joseph’s in last year’s national semifinals, the Tar Heels are determined to prove they can go all the way this season. UNC led the nation last year in goals (81) and points (236), while ranking second in penalty corners (195 over 21 games). North Carolina returns a dominant roster, including second-year captain Sietske Brüning and offensive threats Charly Bruder, who led the nation in 2024 in goals (27), and Ryleigh Heck (2024 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Honda Sports Award Finalist).
October 24, 2025 | Syracuse @ No. 8 Boston College | Boston College Field Hockey Complex
Record last season: 14-7 (6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference)
As its penultimate regular season contest, the Orange travel to battle No. 8 Boston College, who defeated the Cuse 1-0 in its regular season finale. The Eagles finished last season ranked 7th in the nation, courtesy of upsets over Duke and Virginia, and look forward to bringing back a strong offensive core and ACC Goalkeeper of the year Charlotte Kramer. SU aims to exact revenge this season.
November 1, 2025 | Syracuse @ Louisville | Trager Stadium
Record last season: 6-11 (1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference)
And last but not least, SU heads down south to Kentucky to face Louisville. The Cuse narrowly topped the Cardinals 2-1 last season, with both goals courtesy of grad student Bo Van Kempen off of a penalty corner. Van Kempen was a dual threat for Syracuse last season, excelling both in the backfield and as the team’s leading scorer on penalty corners. The Netherlands native tallied 13 of her 15 goals from the striking circle and aims to keep that momentum going in 2025. Syracuse aims to close the regular season strong and land a high ACC Tournament seed. A top-four finish would give them the bonus of a first-round bye.
