BRIDGEWATER, M.A. — It took three games and nine periods, but Syracuse ice hockey (1-2, 0-0 Atlantic Hockey America) finally earned its first win of the 2025-26 season with a 3-2 victory against Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 New England Women’s Hockey Alliance). SU broke a two-game scoring drought and recorded its fourth straight win against Stonehill dating back to 2022-23, remaining undefeated against the program.

While the final score was different, the start to tonight’s contest was the exact same as Syracuse’s season opener against No. 5 Minnesota Duluth (4-0, 0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) last Thursday. The Orange let up a goal less than a minute in, with tonight’s first score coming from Skyhawks forward Gracie Sacca 11 seconds into the first period. A few minutes later, SU’s season-long scoring drought finally came to an end with a goal from forward Nea Tervonen. Once the Orange evened it up, everything clicked. Syracuse scored two more goals from forwards Jackson Kinsler and Emma Gnade. SU never trailed after its 1-0 deficit.

On the defensive side, Orange goalie Bella Gould got her first start in net this season. Despite being the primary backup last year, appearing in seven games and totaling 38 saves, freshman Ava Drabyk saw the ice for Syracuse’s first series against UMD. In her 2025-26 debut, Gould held her own with 24 saves and a .923 save percentage.

However, it wasn’t all perfect. For the third consecutive game, SU failed to score on the power play, going 0-4 on those opportunities. In last week’s series against the Bulldogs, the Orange went 0-6 in the first matchup before going 0-4 in the second contest. That’s 0-14 on power play chances altogether.

Syracuse takes the ice tomorrow against Stonehill for the second matchup in this two-game series. Puck drop is at 1 p.m. from Bridgewater Ice Arena. For all coverage of tomorrow’s contest and the first-half of SU’s 2025-26 season, follow @JaredValentin_ and @CitrusTVSports on X/Twitter!
