Chestnut Hill, Mass – Syracuse softball (13-16, 1-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) edges out Boston College (11-28, 2-11 Atlantic Coast Conference) 4-1 in a classic pitcher’s duel. So, how did the Orange come away with its second ACC win of the season?
SU got on the board in the first inning on an RBI double from Madison Knight that scored Jadyn Burney. BC would then tie it in the bottom of the fifth off ‘Cuse starter Julianna Verni on a wild pitch with just one out in the inning. With the go-ahead run on third and two outs, catcher Grace Weaver flipped it to Verni to tag out the BC runner trying to score the go-ahead run.
But the swing of the game came from Knight. With runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, the senior belted a go-ahead three-run home run to lead SU to the win. Knight now has nine home runs and 25 RBI, both leading Syracuse.
In the bottom half, the Eagles loaded the bases, but Knight struck out Janis Espinoza to end the game.
In the circle, SU’s Julianna Verni threw 6.1 innings, striking out a career-high 13 hitters. All told, both teams combined to leave 21 runners on base and go 3-25 with runners in scoring position. Boston College went 0-14 against Verni and Knight this afternoon.
These two teams will play against each other two more times this week: Saturday at 3:00 and Sunday at 1:00. For live game updates, follow @nickzuppe on X/Twitter and @citrustvsports on X/Twitter and Youtube for coverage!
