College Park, MD – On day two of the Terrapin Invitational, Syracuse softball (9-6, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a late comeback to beat Providence (4-9, 0-0 Big East) 8-5. Late in the seventh inning, it didn’t look like it was going to go the Orange’s way, but they pulled it out. So, how did they do it?
SU took an early lead through the first two and a half innings after a Madison Knight double and a Jadyn Burney single. But, in the bottom of that inning, Providence took the lead 3-2 thanks to a two RBI single from Brianna De La Fuente.
But, Knight struck again at the top of the 6th with a solo home run that tied it at 3. That’s the senior’s fifth home run of the year in just 45 at-bats. She had four homers last season in 69 at-bats.
After that, the friars scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and were three outs away from the win, being up 5-3. But, Syracuse said, “not so fast”.
In the seventh, the Orange put up five runs, and all of them came with two outs. The ‘Cuse loaded the bases, and after a hit by pitch of Erika Zamora resulted in a run, Gabby Lantier had the swing of the weekend.
The outfielder cleared the bases with a three RBI triple that scored Erika Zamora, Lauren Fox, and Sophia Taliaferro. The triple is the first extra-base hit of the season for Lantier as well.
In the bottom half, Madison shut the door by retiring the side in order.
Syracuse is back in action next weekend in the UMBC Classic in Maryland. The game for the ‘Cuse is this Friday at 11:00 AM against Albany, with another game that day at 4:00 PM against UMBC.
