CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. | Syracuse women’s soccer (4-6-2, 1-4 ACC) tallied a season-low one shot in its 4-0 loss to No. 15 Virginia (6-2-2, 2-2 ACC) on Saturday night. The Orange were outshot 23-1, 12-0 on goal and 6-1 on corner kicks.
Syracuse’s lone shot was recorded by midfielder Moo Galbus in the second half. The ‘Cuse’s one shot is its fewest in a game since Oct. 7, 2021, against Florida State where the Orange also tallied just a single attempt. SU fell 5-0 to FSU.
Virginia’s offense wasted no time getting out in front. The Cavaliers recorded the first seven shots of the game and four on goal, including the match’s first score. UVA forward Giovana Canali scored in the ninth minute to give Virginia the lead. The goal was assisted by midfielder Ella Carter.
The Orange defense continued to bend, but didn’t break into halftime and throughout the beginning of the second half. Although SU was significantly outshot, goalkeeper Maya Naimoli stood her ground. The redshirt junior tied a season-high eight saves on the night, a record previously set in SU’s win last Thursday against Pittsburgh.
However, the Cavaliers broke through in the final third of game action. UVA scored three goals in the span of five minutes. Virginia scored its second goal of the game in the 80th minute. Cavaliers forward Aniyah Collier snuck one past Naimoli. The score was assisted by midfielder Addison Halpern. The sophomore leads the team with nine goals and three assists.
UVA’s final two goals were both scored by defender Jordyn Hardeman in the 83rd and 85th minute. It’s the sophomore’s second and third goals of her career, and first brace at the collegiate level.
Syracuse has been outshot in every ACC game this season. Things don’t get any easier for the Orange. SU travels back home to host No. 8 Stanford (7-2-2, 1-2-1 ACC) this Thursday, Oct. 8. The Cardinal have outshot three of their four conference opponents this year. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
