#5 Syracuse Women’s Lacrosse falls to #9 Maryland

Sometimes you scratch, claw, and fight. But it’s not enough. And tonight that was the case for number 5 Syracuse women’s lacrosse as SU fell inside the jam wireless dome to number 9 Maryland 9–8 in overtime. While the margins were razor thin head coach Kayla Treanor said it all came down to defense.

“I thought both defenses played really well. Our defense and Maryland’s. I thought both goalies were excellent in this game. But ultimately we really needed to make plays and we had plenty of opportunities to do that.”

I thought today when you look at the game and the course of how it went I thought our defense was awesome. I mean you playing against one of the best offense groups in the country. I mean there very good and our defense was very consistent today led by Emily back there. They just did a really nice job sticking with our game plan. Offensively we found a way at the end. I thought we were a little hesitant for a while and sat back. But we found a way to gut it out, so just a big win for us today and I’m really proud of our program and our team’s effort.

I mean I was just excited to celebrate with my teammates, it was a huge team effort. We would not have had that opportunity if the defense hadn’t come up with two stops. So it was a great feeling but definitely a team feeling for everyone

Syracuse drops to 1-2 on the season. At this point last year the Orange were a perfect 3-0. SU will look to get back in the win column next weekend when they travel to take on Notre Dame. The opening draw is set for noon.
