No. 11 Syracuse Field Hockey shatters records in 15-0 season-opening win over Lock Haven
For some people, this may just look like a random white dash. But in field hockey, it’s the insert market for attacking penalty corners. For No. 11 Syracuse Field Hockey, success on the APC was absolutely crucial in its dominant 15-0 win in its season opener over Lock Haven. Part of that offensive success came from grad student Bo van Kempen, who recorded six goals on today’s matchup.
“We do hat tricks for three. We’re not used to six, so well done,” SU Head Coach Lynn Farquhar said.
“One of our words in the beginning was work rate, and energy-related; our second was clinical, and [van Kempen] demonstrated that. And then also Lana [Hamilton] stepped up as a trapper. It was pretty. It made it look simple, and that’s what we want to do.”
But it wasn’t just the veteran players that made an impact for Syracuse in this one. Seven different games recorded their first minutes in Orange, including goals from Aubrey Turner, Ally Snyder, and Karsin Beatty.
“Oh, we love it. And you can always tell from the bench. When you work really hard at something and when you’re new and there’s so much change and there your bench is more excited than you at your goal, it’s pretty exciting. So yeah, there were quite a few today, and we’re excited to see how they keep on growing as we go,” Coach Farquhar added.
“They’re going to be in the mix, so they’re going to figure it out and continue as they go. I have high hopes for them. They’re good hockey players. What’s even more exciting is they’re driven.”
“Our freshman, our challenge for them, is to get the ball to move. It’s a slightly different concept; however, they’re embracing it,” she concluded.
If this season opener was a sneak peek, Syracuse field hockey fans have plenty to smile about. SU hopes to build on its first win of the season as it hosts Fairfield on Sunday. Play is scheduled to begin at 1pm. Reporting from J.S. Coyne Stadium, Sydney Chan, CitrusTV.
