No. 4 Syracuse field hockey suffers heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to No. 20 Wake Forest

American writer Mark Twain once said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” But unfortunately for No. 4 Syracuse field hockey, its nightmare from eight years ago once again resurfaced. The Cuse fell 2-1 in a heartbreaking overtime loss to No. 20 Wake Forest. Orange Head Coach Lynn Farquhar said it came down to a lack of grit.

“Yeah, not the way we wanted to start off at home. But sometimes that’s unfortunately part of the process. You gotta feel it and figure out, how badly do you want something? I think you felt the scales tip today. With grit, there’s a composure with it. And I think that’s the edge piece and that needs to show up,” Farquhar said.

Though time of possession was pretty even between the two squads, the Demon Deacons outshot the Orange 15-6 in this one, including two on penalty corners, where they were able to convert.

“We had opportunities. But an opportunity doesn’t mean much though unless you go after it. I think that was unfortunately the piece that was missing. I think the stats don’t match probably what you’d see possession-wise. However, that’s the piece of the game that matters,” Farquhar added.

Coach Farquhar said the Orange need to capitalize on scoring opportunities within the 25. And the Cuse’s next chance to do so is Sunday as it hosts No. 3 Virginia. Play is slated for noon. Reporting from J.S. Coyne Stadium, Sydney Chan, CitrusTV.
