Penalties Plague Syracuse in 6-1 Loss to Boston University

BOSTON, M.A. – Syracuse women’s ice has prided itself on special teams this season. Entering the second period of today’s game, the Orange had killed off 11 straight power play opportunities for the Terriers. But on that 12th chance in the middle frame, BU finally broke through and carried that momentum into a 6-1 victory over SU today. After the game, head coach Britni Smith said that moment was destined to happen since the ‘Cuse spent a lot of time in the sin bin.

“You’re bound to give up one. For us, we had to stay out of the box tonight. Pretty undisciplined game on our bench tonight, something we talked about and really needed to curve going in the third period. Not sure we did that, so at some point it will cost you.”

“Couldn’t get possession in zone, couldn’t get set up, couldn’t find our opportunities on our entries to really push them [BU] back and allow us to get into our system. So, kudos to their PK, they did a great job, but offensively we got to find ways to set them back to open up our opportunities.”

To Coach Smith’s point, on the other side of the ice, the Orange power play struggled mightily. 8 chances, 0 goals, and just 13 total shots for the afternoon. SU will look to fix those struggles next weekend when they take on No. 15 Penn State, but at the friendly confines of the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
