SU Field Hockey Wraps Up Weekend With Win

By KJ Vaughn SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Field Hockey team beat #14 Stanford at home 3-1 on Sunday, September 11th. The #1 ranked Orange was at home for their second game of the weekend, following Friday’s 3-1 victory over Boston College. The Orange was led by junior forward Laura Hurff, who had one goal and one assist.

Syracuse jumped out to a 2-0 lead after goals by Hurff and Elaine Carey. After halftime, Stanford was the first team to find the back of the net on a shot by Kristina Bassi four minutes into the half. This 2-1 mark would be as close as the game would get.

Just over ten minutes later, sophomore defenseman Roos Weers scored her third goal of the season off of a penalty corner to put the Orange up 3-1. The win kept Syracuse undefeated and will most likely keep them ranked #1 in the country.

In today’s game, the Orange looked much more composed with their midfield link ups and their communication was a lot better than their game on Friday. These skills will be important to keep an eye on as the Orange gets ready for tough road tests against two of the ACC’s best teams in Wake Forest and North Carolina.

Syracuse goal keeper Regan Spencer looked comfortable in net for the Orange, only allowing one goal off of a deflection and making four saves. Top player for the Orange was Laura Hurff, who had two shots, one goal, and an assist. Top player for the Cardinal was Kristina Bassi who scored their only goal, and had three shots on goal.

SU will be back in action one week from today down in North Carolina when they take on the #9 ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
