Syracuse falls 5-2 to #5 Colgate to open 2023.

Despite A month off, Syracuse’s second half of the season started a whole lot like the
first, with a loss to Colgate. The number 5 Raiders beat the Orange 5 to 2, holding them to
under 10 shots in every single period. However, Head Coach Britni Smith took away some
offensive positives in the first performance of 2023.
(Coach Britini Smith): You know you take out our second period and I thought we were generating shots and
opportunities. The third period there our shots, a lot of them were from prime scoring areas, we
found our opportunities to get into the dirty areas of the ice which I really liked. We’ve been
working on things in practice to increase our shot volume, that’s been kind of a theme for us
over the first semester, and moving into the second, so we just gotta keep working at it.
Although the offense has been up and down, one thing that has been consistent all
season is goaltender Arielle DeSmet. The grad student stopped 29 pucks tonight, and is now
just 31 shy of 2,000 career saves for Syracuse. She’ll have the chance to crack that milestone
when another top ten opponent in Cornell visits the TIP next Tuesday. Reporting from Tennity
Ice Pavilion, Luke Burgess, Citrus TV.
