Syracuse Field Hockey Wins at Home Opener
By KJ Vaughn SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Field Hockey team came home for the first time in 2016 and got a win against Boston College. This was Syracuse’s first game of the season at J.S. Coyne stadium, which was just recently renovated.
Included in the renovation was new turf and new bench covers for the sideline. Also new to J.S. Coyne stadium was the 2015 national championship banner that was unveiled before the game. The banner hangs below the scoreboard and is one of two 2015 banners in the stadium. The other one hangs on a fence behind on of the goal cages.
The game was a matchup of two top 20 teams, with Boston College ranked 18th and Syracuse ranked 1st. The first half the game played out like a top ranked battle; both teams scored, making it 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, Syracuse started to pull away and it started with a Syracuse goal by Liz Sack. After going up by one, Syracuse didn’t look back, adding another goal late in the second half by Elaine Carey on an assist from Roos Weers to make it 3-1. The score would stay in Syracuse’s favor, as it finished the second half with two goals while Boston College scored one.
The top performer for Syracuse was the goalkeeper Regan Spencer, who had four saves and only gave up one goal. One of those four saves was a key one in the second half that kept the score 2-1 in favor of Syracuse. The top performer for Boston College was Britany Sheehan, who scored the only goal for Boston College and had two shots on goal.
Throughout the game, Syracuse had three warnings issued to them. One was issued to the team as a whole, one was issued to Lies Lagerweij and the other was issued to Roos Weers.
Syracuse will return to action on Sunday September 11th against Stanford at home.
