Syracuse Struggles Out of the Gate, Loses to Virginia 20-11

Another top five matchup, and another top five loss for Syracuse men’s lacrosse. The #9 Orange made the trip down to Charlottesville this Saturday, they fell 20-11 to #2 Virginia.

Like last Sunday, the Orange came out of the gates flat. After going down 5-0 to #1 Maryland, SU went down 4-0 to Virginia today. Like everyone else, head coach Gary Gait is searching for answers.

“We’re certainly not trying to start slow,” Gait said, “Our guys are tight, and we’ll change up our warmup, we’ll do something, and try and get these guys going early.”

Now, there still was some silver lining despite the loss. Transfer goalie Bobby Gavin, playing against his former team in UVA, turned away 12 shots. His defense didn’t do too much to help him out, but Gait was still pleased with his performance.

“Bobby Gavin was great,” Gait said, “He’s a good kid, he stuck in, we hung him out to dry there a little bit. He had some wide open shots early and they’re tough to stop, but he made some saves. We made a little bit of a run in there at least and that showed a little bit of character, but we’ve got to play 60 minutes and we were not close to that today.”

Two bright spots for the Orange on offense were Griffin Cook who finished with 3 goals, and Mikey Berkman who tallied 2 goals and 2 assists.

Next up for Syracuse is another ranked opponent. Not quite a top five opponent, #14 Army makes the trip to the Dome on Wednesday, the two teams square off at 4:30 p.m.
