Syracuse Tennis Dominates Season Opener In 7-0 Sweep of Army

When the weeknd’s roll around in January, that means Syracuse Tennis is back in action at Drumlins. Rewind to almost a year ago to the day, SU took down NJIT 7-0 in its season opener. Fast forward to today and it was deja vu as the ‘Cuse won by the same scoreline, this time beating Army. The Orange kicked off the match with a dominant performance in doubles and with five of last year’s six starters returning, that chemistry was on full display to set the tone for the rest of the dual.

“I think playing with Miyuka (Kimoto) is always fun and we are best friends. We communicate very well and I think especially today we had a good start,” said junior Shiori Ito.

“We started really well and doubles plays a huge role in a college match. Sometimes in those 4-3 matches, whoever wins the doubles usually wins them. We’re making sure we’re spending a little more time on doubles and we feel good going into every match,” said head coach Younes Limam.

While there is plenty of familiarity among this year’s roster, one new addition is Florida transfer Anastasia Sysoeva. It’s safe to say the sophomore has fit in quite nicely, winning her singles match 6-2, 6-0. Sysoeva and the rest of her teammates hope to carry some momentum into tomorrow’s matchup with Fordham. First serve from Drumlins is scheduled for 11 a.m.
