WBB: Syracuse Dominates UNC 95-64

By Noah Wolfe

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Women’s basketball team got back on track with a 95 to 64 win over North Carolina. The victory marks the 18th straight time that the Orange has come out on top in the Carrier Dome.

The win also improves Syracuse to 9-4 in ACC play, good for fourth place in the conference.

“Being 9-4 in the best conference in the country is phenomenal,” head coach Quentin Hillsman said after the game. “I’m really just proud of our kids.”

The Orange compensated for a slow offensive start by playing stifling defense in the first half. During the first 20 minutes of play, Coach Q’s squad held the Tar Heels to just 1-14 from behind the arc, well below its 30 percent average on the season.

The ladies turned up the offensive heat in the second half, outscoring North Carolina 53 to 38. The defense played exeptionally well in the second half, finishing the game with 10 steals and 27 points off of turnovers.

Brittney Sykes turned in another stellar performance for the Orange, coming away with a career high 34 points, in addition to six rebounds and two steals.

Alexis Peterson also added 27 points while contributing seven assists and a season high eight rebounds. The senior guard has scored in double figures in every game this season.

Briana Day chipped in 19 points of her own, along with a career best 16 rebounds. Much of her success on the glass came when the North Carolina native matched up against UNC’s smaller guards.

When Sykes, Peterson and Day all score in double figures, the Orange has just three losses this season.

Up next, Syracuse will have a week long break before its biggest test of the season against No. 2 Notre Dame. Tipoff is slated for 5 PM in the Carrier Dome next Sunday.
