Without guard Dominique Darius, 9-seed Syracuse Women’s Basketball beat 8-seed Iowa State.

(Milo Hoffman) With Syracuse guard and captain Dominque Darius sidelined because of hand injury. It would have to be a full team effort for Syracuse to pull out a win this evening, and that’s exactly what happened in its 72-63 triumph over Iowa State in round 1 of the ncaa tournament. One of the many contributors for SU was guard Olivia Schmitt.

(Olivia Schmitt) Honestly I don’t know I kind of just hit a state of mind. This is a moment where I had the hot hand, and I knew I had to take over. My teammates did a great job at finding me when I was hot.

(Hoffman) Schmitt did all of her damage from beyond the arc with 5 threes, but a more familiar face on the scoresheet, Uche Izoje got it done down low.

(Bill Fennelly) We talked a lot about her going into the game, she was making tough shots. Hand in her face, we haven’t really seen anything like that, it’s a very unique skillset. One that we had not seen, but very impressed.

(Hoffman) Just a full-team effort, but the challenge gets tough. SU battles top seeded Uconn on Monday on their home court. Two seasons ago, the Huskies beat the Orange in the second round to send them home. Reporting from the Gampel Pavilion at the NCAA tournament. Milo Hoffman Citrus TV.
