SOUTH BEND, IN – Syracuse softball earned its first ACC conference win of the season in a doubleheader against Notre Dame. The first game saw the Orange triumph over the Fighting Irish, 5-3, while the second game ended in a scoreless tie due to weather.

In the first game, Maddison Knight took to the mound for Syracuse and allowed only two runs, although it wasn’t her most dominant performance with five batters walked and only two strikeouts. She needed one more out to get out of a sixth-inning jam when Jane Kronenberg stepped up to bat for Notre Dame. On the 103rd pitch of the game, Kronenberg hit a line drive that seemed like a sure hit, but Trinity Nichols, the SU second baseman, made an incredible diving catch to end the inning.

Syracuse’s offense exploded in the fourth inning with Madelyn Lopez and Kelly Breen collecting back-to-back singles to lead-off the inning. Angel Jasso then hit a double into right-center field for an RBI, and Lauren Vaughn drove in two more runs with a line drive down the third base line. Nichols also pulled a single to score Vaughn and bring Syracuse’s lead to five.

Although Notre Dame threatened in the seventh inning, Knight secured her second career complete game to earn Syracuse’s first ACC win of the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Lindsey Hendrix kept Notre Dame off the scoreboard for the first four innings. However, Syracuse’s offense failed to show up, with only five singles and one true scoring threat in the fifth inning.

After an hour-long rain delay in the seventh inning, the Orange and Fighting Irish were held scoreless and the game was sent to extra innings. However, it was again delayed due to weather and never resumed.

Syracuse takes on Louisville in a three games series at home this upcoming weekend.
