Orange Fall in Overtime in Upset Bid at Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY — Less than 24 hours after a 6-2 blowout loss to No. 2 Clarkson (7-1, 0-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference), Syracuse (2-6, 2-2 College Hockey America) fell just short of a major upset, losing 4-3 in overtime. Despite the loss, Saturday’s game was a huge improvement after a game in which the Orange played “as bad of hockey as I’ve seen in a long time” according to Syracuse Head Coach Paul Flanagan. SU needed to play a better game in all aspects to have a chance at upsetting the Golden Knights. The Orange got that chance.

The game was evenly matched and Syracuse answered every Clarkson goal with one of their own, including both of Allie Munroe’s goals that tied the game with less than two minutes to play.

Munroe’s goals forced overtime to give SU a chance at their first win against a ranked team since January 28th, 2017 against No. 7 Robert Morris.

Credit is due for the Golden Knights however after their first test of the season. Clarkson never trailed despite the tight game throughout. T.T. Cianfarano stood out with two goals including the game-winner less than a minute and a half into overtime.

On the SU side, the Orange has now played four of their eight games this season against non-conference ranked opponents. In the three games prior to Saturday’s match, Syracuse lost all three by a combined score of 15-4.

After three games out of conference this week, Syracuse resumes CHA play at Penn State next Saturday for a weekend series. Saturday’s and Sunday’s games begin at 2pm.
