Syracuse Trounced By Wisconsin 9-1, Extend Losing Streak to Six

Madison, WI — Two blowout losses in two days for Syracuse (4-12-1, 4-3-0 College Hockey America) at the hands of No. 1 Wisconsin (17-1-0, 8-0-0 Western Collegiate Athletic Association). Much like Saturday’s game, the Orange stayed close on the scoreboard for the first half of the game. But the Badgers pulled away in another absolute rout, this time by a final of 9-1.

With less than four minutes remaining in the second period, SU was hanging in, only down 3-1. But after that, the Badgers scored six goals to pull away and destroy the Orange.

It’s the first time Syracuse has allowed nine goals in a game since October 12th, 2014 against Clarkson. The Orange lost that game 9-0.

Though Wisconsin is ranked No. 1 in the country, it was a poor effort statistically by SU. Syracuse was outshot 40-9. For context, Wisconsin scored as many goals as Syracuse had shots all of Sunday.

Maddi Welch, after making a career-high 48 saves on Saturday, allowed nine goals Saturday on 40 shots, saving less than 80% of the shots she faced.

On the Wisconsin side, it was a great day for the offense and especially Emily Clark. Clark scored the opening goal in the game and completed the hat trick near the midway mark of the third period. Meanwhile, Annie Pankowski tallied a team-leading four points, including three assist.

The lone bright spot for the Orange was the goal early in the second period. Freshman Abby Moloughney scored her third goal of the season short handed and Lauren Bellefontaine picked up the assist. Also a freshman, Bellefontaine leads the team in goals (4), assists (6), and points (10) this season, which is a glimmer of hope for the future of Paul Flanagan’s program in a season that has been full of struggles.

Syracuse next plays a home-and-home series against Colgate on Thursday and Saturday. Thursday’s game is set for 7 p.m. at the Tennity Ice Pavillion.
