Dominating Performance Gives the Orange First Win of the Season

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The late great Herb Brooks once said in his famous Miracle on Ice speech, “If we played ‘em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight.”

The Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey team had lost their first nine games of the season, but like the 1980 U.S. hockey team, they wouldn’t lose their tenth.

Syracuse (1-9, 0-0 College Hockey America) defeated Union (0-6-1, 0-0 Eastern College Athletic) in a dominating fashion 5-0 to notch its first win of the season.

Senior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood got the scoring started thirteen minutes into the first period with one of her signature slapshots, getting it past Dutchwomen goalie Amelia Murray.

Fellow defenseman Jessica DiGirolamo tallied another SU goal just two minutes later. She would score again in the second period, further extending the SU lead.

Anna Leschyshyn and Savannah Rennie added goals by the end of the second frame to create the 5-0 final score, a lead the Orange would never relinquish.

Abby Moloughney was the unsung hero for Syracuse offense, who assisted on four of SU’s five goals. Moloughney’s six points on the season now tie the team lead with DiGirolamo.

The Orange also excelled defensively as Syracuse killed off all five of Union’s power play opportunities and limited shooting lanes. SU ended up outshooting Union 37-20.

This allowed goaltender Ady Cohen to record her second-career shutout, her first since February 9, 2019. Allison Small has been the primary netminder for the Orange as of late, but Cohen’s good performance on Tuesday could make the starting goalie job a bit murky going forward.

Syracuse looks to build on their first win with their first conference action against RIT on Friday and Saturday.
