MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – On Friday, the Orange and Colonials meet for the first time since the 2020-21 season. The last encounter was in the 2021 CHA Championship, in which RMU triumphed over SU. In 2023, Syracuse women’s ice hockey (3-8-1, 0-3 CHA) was on the wrong side of history once again, falling 4-2 to Robert Morris (5-6-0, 2-1 CHA). The Orange have dropped their fourth straight contest.

The opening period was filled with fireworks. Shailynn Snow pickpocketed Kambel Beacom in the Syracuse zone and then went five-hole on Allie Kelley to give Robert Morris the lead five minutes in. However, the Orange equalized the score two minutes later on a power play when Alexandria Weiss’s point shot went through a sea of defenders and past Emma Gorski. In a matter of 50 seconds, the Colonials struck back when Morgan Giannone capitalized on a 2-on-1 opportunity.

With 4:40 left in the second, star redshirt freshman Alaina Giampietro went top cheddar over Kelley’s left shoulder to increase RMU’s lead. In terms of goals, assists, and points, the Ohio State transfer tops all rookies in the CHA and NCAA.

Syracuse pushed back in the final frame and was rewarded for its efforts to the woman advantage once again. Tatum White cut the deficit in half when she collected a loose puck in front of the net and converted. Nonetheless, head coach Britni Smith’s squad fell short as Giannone sent a backhander down the ice and into the back of the net to seal the deal for Robert Morris.

SU returns to action tomorrow night, staying in western Pennsylvania to face RMU in the weekend series finale. Face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will benefit Sticks Together, a non-profit founded by Syracuse’s Sarah Thompson that strives to teach hockey in underserved communities.
