Despite going down a player, Syracuse women’s soccer played to a 0-0 draw with Fairfield on Sunday. After three straight losses SU finally picks up points on the road in game four of a five game road span.

Early on the Orange came out strong in the attacking third. Erin Flurey recorded a shot on goal in the very first minute. After that, the opportunities dried up. Syracuse didn’t record another shot on target for the entire first half. The ‘Cuse would go on to tally one more shot on goal in the entire game.

The real stake through the heart of SU’s winning chances came in the 51st minute. The Stags generated a breakaway chance with the opportunity to take the lead. Senior Kate Murphy ran with the attacker and delivered a slide tackle from behind, just on the edge of the 18-yard box. Murphy was promptly given a red, forcing the Orange to continue down a player for the final 39 minutes.

The main reason the score stayed level all game fell on Shea Vanderbosch yet again. Fairfield broke down SU’s back line multiple times leading to one on one chances. Time and time again Vanderbosch stepped up, using positioning and the Stag’s own weaknesses in attack to hold Fairfield scoreless. The sophomore’s tally of five saves doesn’t do her performance justice, as she stepped up in multiple ways that don’t show up on the stat sheet.

The Orange have now completed non-conference play with a record of 2-5-1. The final 10 games of the season are all against ACC opponents, the first of which is Miami. SU and the Hurricanes square off in Dade County on September 15th. Kickoff time is still to be announced.
