The Syracuse Orange softball team extended their win streak to nine games on Friday, defeating Boston College in the first of two doubleheaders this weekend.

They were two games that the Orange were favored to win, as Boston College sits in the basement of the ACC standings. Maybe the Orange underestimated the Eagles though, as they found themselves in a battle in game one despite Alexa Romero’s stunning performance once again.

BC scored in the bottom of the 5th inning, leaving SU in a tough situation where they only had six outs to spare. After a scoreless 6th inning from both teams, the Orange came up in the top of the 7th.

Paris Woods advanced to third on an error and a misplay from the Eagles right fielder, and was later sent home from a fielder choice off the bat of Rebecca Clyde. The Orange only mustered up one run in the top of the 7th. The bottom of the 7th was a scary one, as Romero had to work her way out of a jam to send the game into extra innings.

Fresh off being featured on Sportscenter’s Top 10, Angel Jasso drove in the game winning run in the top of the 8th, making the game 2-1 and the eventual final score.

Romero showed out today, and there’s no question that she’s on an absolute heater right now. She had five strikeouts after two innings and ended with 12 strikeouts on the game, which puts her at 38 strikeouts through three games. Her ERA is down to 2.25, a huge improvement from just a month ago, when she was hovering at around 3.20.

The second game was much more of a one sided contest, as the Orange scored in every inning but the first and sixth.

Lost within all of the offense is Kaia Woods outstanding performance. Seven runs should be enough for any starting pitcher, but Woods holding the Eagles to just one run in a complete game is impressive. She has continued to be a bright spot throughout the season and is only getting better.

The Orange face the Eagles in another 1:00/3:00 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow before heading home to take on the Florida State Seminoles next week.
