Number two Syracuse Women’s Lacrosse made the trip to Chestnut Hill with a perfect 8-0 record in ACC play. However, for the second straight year, Boston College played spoilers. With under two minutes to play in overtime, BC midfielder Cassidy Weeks charged toward the cage and set the Orange home with their first ACC loss of the season.
This game had everything. Similar to their two meetings last year, this content was back and forth. SU led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, and 5-3 at halftime. However, the Eagles would not go away. Boston College eventually took a 6-5 lead around the six-minute mark in the third. From that point on, the Orange and Eagles would exchange goals the rest of the way.
While the contest was tight, it looked like Syracuse would get to the finish line. With just under four minutes to play Savannah Sweitzer dodged past her defender and scored to take a 10-9. Maybe against most other opponents that would have been game over. But the Eagles found a way. With 1:30 remaining Rachel Clark netted her third goal of the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, SU’s Kate Mashewske did her job and won the opening draw. Syracuse worked the ball around and eventually found Natalie Smith open in the middle of the defense. Smith fired a shot high and it was saved by Eagles goalie Shea Dolce. Following the save, Boston College scored on the next possession to close the deal.
Syracuse head coach Kayla Treanor is now 0-4 against her former team. Despite the loss, Syracuse is still the one seed for the ACC tournament. SU is back in action on Wednesday at 11 against either Louisville or Virginia Tech.
