Riverside, C.A. – After Friday’s rainouts, Syracuse softball went 1-2 in the Lance Up Invite. In Saturday’s doubleheader, the Orange took on Harvard in game one, where veteran pitchers Lindsey Hendrix and Kaia Oliver combined for a shutout in a 1-0 win.

However, tournament host California Baptist was too much to handle in the second leg of the doubleheader, as the Lancers defeated Syracuse 8-2.

Sophomore left fielder Angie Ramos was a standout performer for the Orange, recording a hit in both games. The team combined for 11 hits across the two contests.

Game one was a tight affair, with Syracuse coming out on top against Harvard. Hendrix’s excellent start earned her the win, as the senior pitcher from Orlando, Florida, struck out five batters in 6.1 innings while allowing only three hits and one walk. Harvard’s starter, Katie Arrambide, also threw a complete game, but Syracuse managed to break through in the third inning. Angel Jasso’s single and Ramos reaching on an error gave Syracuse two runners on base. A wild pitch allowed Jasso to score the winning run, securing a 1-0 victory.

The second game of the doubleheader did not go as well for Syracuse. Star freshman Madison Knight got the start, but California Baptist scored early and often, with Maya Martinez’s solo home run in the first inning setting the tone. The Lancers added three more runs in the third inning, although Syracuse scored two runs in the fourth inning. However, it was too little too late. The Lancers then continued to produce at the plate, adding another three runs to win 8-2.

Today, Syracuse suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of UC San Diego in the finale of the Lance Up Invite in Riverside, California. The game was closely contested in the early innings with both teams failing to score in the first inning. However, UC San Diego managed to score in the second inning when they loaded the bases with singles from Teagan Dobson and Keila Bosinger and a hit-by pitch. A walk from Hailey Mulligan gave them the lead, 1-0. They doubled their advantage in the third inning thanks to a leadoff double from Bobbi Aguirre and a sacrifice fly from Dobson.

The UC San Diego offense continued to roll in the fourth inning, adding two more runs. A pair of fielder’s choices saw two more runs come across the plate, taking the score to 4-0. The Tritons added two more runs in the fifth inning, with a Georgia Heathcock RBI double and a Sophia Real hit bringing home Heathcock for the sixth and final run of the game.

Despite the loss, the Syracuse softball team had some good moments. The Orange logged four hits, with Angie Ramos, Kelly Breen, Taylor Posner, and Olivia Pess all tallying base hits. Lindsey Hendrix got the start for the Orange, pitching four innings and allowing four runs on four hits with one strikeout. Kaia Oliver added two innings in relief, striking out one batter while allowing three hits and two runs.

The Orange will now look ahead to their next challenge, a midweek contest against No. 2 UCLA at Easton Stadium on Tuesday, Mar. 14. With the defeat still fresh in their minds, Syracuse will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance against one of the top teams in the nation.
