PITTSBURGH, PA — The Orange, fresh off their loss to then No. 6 Louisville, traveled to the Steel City and punched the Panthers to get back in the win column.
From the jump, it seemed as though Pitt was going to compete. The Panthers trailed by just one early, but soon after, the Orange showed who was the better team. SU outscored Pitt 22–4 in the second quarter, which set the tone for what would become a demolition.
Four players reached double digits for SU, and three of them were the usual suspects. Center Uche Izoje tallied 18 points with five rebounds and three blocks. Her unbelievable freshman season continues and she proves why she’s one of the better bigs in the conference.
Guard Sophie Burrows added 18 points as well, and there was a point in the game when she was on fire. The junior nailed two threes in the second quarter for a total of eight points in that frame. If the Orange want to go on a serious run, Burrows has to be a factor and as of late, she’s been just that.
Lastly among the usual contributors was guard Dominique Darius. The grad student had 11 points, but she impacted the game with her ball movement. Darius had nine assists, which was a game-high. This season, she’s recognized when it’s her job to facilitate, and tonight was one of those nights.
Now for the surprise player: Maddy Potts. The sophomore came off the bench once the Orange had full control and made an instant impact. She hit two threes in a row during the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points. But it wasn’t just her scoring, Potts also had four rebounds, including a rare offensive board.
The challenge gets harder for SU this Sunday when it battles Clemson. The Tigers have won four of their last five games. Tip-off from the Dome is at 2:00 p.m. For live updates and coverage, follow @mhoffnyc on X.
