Syracuse volleyball goes 0-2 in the first day of the Kathy DeBore invitational
By Rahill Jaiswal
Syracuse Volleyball fell to Delaware State and Michigan State on the first day of the Kathy DeBore invitational tournament.
The first match was at noon against Delaware State. The Orange started slowly, falling behind 5-2. From that point on the Hornets never looked back. Delaware State quickly extended its lead to 11-6. Syracuse would fight back and cut the lead to four, but couldn’t get any closer. The Hornets would swiftly close out the first set 25-15.
The second set was a similar story. Delaware State jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. The Hornets could do no wrong the whole set. Before the Orange could blink they found themselves down 2-0 overall.
Syracuse started the third set much better. Graduate student Alyssa Bert fired three straight great serves to tie the set at nine. Both teams would go back and forth for the rest of the set. However, with the match tied at 18 the Hornets would win four straight points and eventually close the set and match.
SU had the chance to rebound against Michigan State later that night. The first and second set were almost exactly the same. The Spartans started quickly and built large advantages early. Michigan State rode both big leads to 25-12, and 25-13 sets.
Similar to the first match, the third set was a different story. Both teams went back and forth splitting the first 18 points. However, Michigan State’s offensive pressure started to wear SU down. With the Spartans leading 17-13 it looked like Michigan State would cruise, but Syracuse showed lots of heart. The Orange went on a run and earned themselves two set points at 24-22. However, it wasn’t meant to be. Syracuse committed a service error and Michigan State would take full advantage. The Spartans wrapped the set 26-24 to complete the sweep.
The Orange fell to 0-5 and 0-15 in sets played. Bakeer Ganesharatam and his team aim for redemption in the final game of the tournament against Belmont. First serve is set for Sunday at 11 am.
