Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey gets Pummeled by No. 4 Colgate 12-0

After putting together a somewhat competitive opening 20 minutes, Syracuse (4-15-2, 1-6-1 CHA) got decimated in the middle and last frames to put itself in a hole too large to climb out of against No. 4 Colgate. The Cuse allowed nine goals to be scored in the last 40 minutes of action. A lot of the issues the Orange faced on Tuesday afternoon came from their team defense.
Playing superb defense against one of the best teams in the country is easier said than done. But against great teams, the goal isn’t to completely stop them (because that’s near impossible) but it’s to at least contain them. Syracuse did a pretty good job of that in the first period, despite going down by three. The deficit wasn’t too large to come back from with tons of time left to play.
However, in the following periods, the Raiders (18-3-1, 9-1 ECAC) just wore down the Orange with tons of offensive zone time, tiring out the SU squad. Syracuse left players all alone in front of its net which resulted in tons of tap-in tallies being racked up by Colgate.
Overall, the Raiders outscored the Orange by a whopping 21-0 through both their matchups this season. To make matters worse, Syracuse was outshot in the series 125-23.
SU only has a few days off before its next tilt this weekend. Syracuse travels to Mercyhurst for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
