Syracuse Basketball Dominates in Win Over Drexel in Philadelphia
At the end of the first half, Syracuse was ahead of Drexel by just five points. Although in the second half, the Orange would route the Dragons 80 to 50. And after the game, head coach Adrian Autry credited the defensive intensity for the switch.
“Being aggressive, hunting,” said Autry. “And I thought we did that the second half. I thought the first half we had a couple of couple of dips in it, but the second half we just strung it together. you know, we we strung, you know, a lot of possessions together and I thought that was the difference.
Another key aspect that changed for Syracuse in the second half is something that head coach Adrian Autry is calling the juicing station.
“We talk about playing with energy and a level five energy and intensity,” Autry started. “And when we got this team together, you know, we knew we were talented. We knew we could play nine to 10 guys. And you know the bench is what we call our juicing station, right? Those guys are in it. They’re waiting for us. They wait for our they’re waiting to get in, right? They provide energy. You know, they got the juice and once they get in the game, they bring the juice, you know? And I thought the first half we didn’t do that. I thought the second half our juicing station, you know, they they came in and and really set the tone.”
“I think in the second half, especially those guys on the bench that came into the game really really helped us open it up and played great,” said guard Nate Kingz.
“When coach red told us that this year we was kind of just laughing at him, but you know, he takes that super serious,” said guard Kiyan Anthony. “Like the juicing station, he said we [were] ‘bs-ing’ in the first half with the juicing station. So we try to pick it up and you know, we cut the lead open. It’s just not the guys on the floor, it’s also the guys on the bench and the coaches bringing the energy and instilling confidence into us.”
The one sour note for Syracuse and Philadelphia is that Tyler Betsey went down in the first half to what looked to be a lower body injury. Head coach Adrian Autry did not have any update on his status, but he did say guard JJ Starling is very close to returning. He could come back in Syracuse’s next game against Monmouth Tuesday night at 9:00 PM in the JMA Wireless Dome.
