Veteran Backcourt Leads Syracuse to Victory over Central Connecticut State

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse women’s basketball team recorded its second consecutive win with a 95-63 rout of Central Connecticut State in the Carrier Dome Sunday afternoon.

The victory marked the third time the Orange broke the 90 point threshold this season.

After opening the game with an 11-0 run, the Orange set the tone with dominant performances from its core of talented seniors.

Brittney Sykes led the way for Syracuse, recording her eighth career double double.  She also recorded a career high 14 rebounds in addition to her 26 points.  The New Jersey native’s strong scoring effort propelled her to 9th on the Syracuse all time scoring list.

For the graduate though, being on the scoring list isn’t a top priority.

“The ultimate goal is to help our team the best way possible,” Sykes said. “We do a good job of not being caught up in the scoring list or scoring points. Because if you’re not scoring, scoring isn’t everything.”

Alexis Peterson also filled out the stat sheet, notching 26 points and 10 assists in the contest.  With her gaudy passing performance, the Orange put up a season high 25 assists on the game.

Briana Day added eight rebounds and a season high 22 points in another solid game anchoring the frontcourt.

Sykes and Peterson also admitted that a friendly scoring competition helps fuel SU’s high powered offense. But the pair was adamant that their friendly rivalry does not disrupt team chemistry.

“Going back to the summer, understanding that we have another year to play together, not many people can say they’ve been able to play with someone that’s a class above them for four years,” Peterson said. “We knew that our experience was going to be something that really help this team this year and that other teams didn’t have coming back.”

The Orange take the court again this Wednesday in matinee against Coppin State.  Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m.
