Orange Offense Falls Silent in First Road Test Under Adams

HANOVER, N.H. — Before the Syracuse women’s soccer team left the Salt City, the Orange were riding high on Nicky Adams’ new high-octane offense. Syracuse was off to its first 2-0 start since 2004 with back-to-back shutouts at home.
But the Orange were a completely different team in Hanover. The offense looked listless as Syracuse (2-1-0, 0-0-0 Atlantic Coast) falls to Dartmouth (2-0, 0-0 Ivy League) in a 2-0 defeat.
Syracuse had been unleashing a barrage of shots upon opponents in their first two contests, taking 17 shots against Colgate and 16 against Siena. On Sunday, SU only attempted five shots in the entire match with only one coming in the first half.
To make matters worse, only two of the five attempts were actually steered on goal. Sydney Brackett and Laurel Ness, both goal scorers in the previous matches, provided the two shots on goal while Marisa Fischetti’s three attempts all missed the goal.
On the other side, Dartmouth fired nine shots, six directed towards Lysianne Proulx between the posts. The first goal came in the 10th minute as Allie Winstanley took the feed from Hayley Soriano and buried one in the back of the net. In the 75th minute, it was Soriano’s turn, scoring on a wide-open net following a rebound from one of Proulx’s four saves.
Beyond the shooting, Syracuse simply couldn’t get anything going offensively, procuring only one corner in the entire match, and it took until the 88th minute to get it. Dartmouth had seven corners in the match.
The Orange were also called offsides on four separate occasions while the Big Green were not called off once.
If the final box score wasn’t ugly enough, Mackenzie Vlachos picked up the first yellow card of the season for Syracuse in the 49th minute.
Syracuse will look to put this match behind them in a hurry as they will be off to Auburn (1-1, 0-0 Southeastern) on Thursday night for their first Power 5 match of the season with the Tigers.
