College Park, MD – On day two of the Terrapin Invitational, Syracuse softball (9-6, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) whalloped UMBC (2-4, 0-0 America East Conference) 11-1. The Orange tied a season-high in runs on nine hits and drew five walks as well. The win marks the second time this season that the ‘Cuse has won by way of the run-rule.
The SU offense was on fire from the opening inning of the game. The Orange put up an eight-spot in the bottom of the first. Plus, they sent 11 hitters to the dish, which both mark a season-high. Well, how did it happen?
It was a combination of everything: SU drew two walks with the bases loaded that scored two runs, a sacrifice fly from Lauren Fox, an RBI single from Vanessa Flores, but the swing of the game came from outfielder Jadyn Burney. The grad student blasted her first collegiate home run, clearing the bases.
Later on in the game, SU added three more in the bottom of the third inning, by, once again, doing a little bit of everything: The rally started with Burney singling a run, which marked her career-high 5th RBI and third hit of the game. After that, a pitch hit Harmony Jackson, and Taylor Davidson hit a sacrifice fly, both with the bases loaded.
On the defensive side, Jackie Pengel threw the whole game. Over five innings, the senior gave up only one run that came in the fifth inning, four hits, and struck out five UMBC hitters.
Syracuse concludes the weekend in the Terrapin Invitational, battling Providence tomorrow, with the first pitch set for 10:00 AM.
