ROCHESTER, NY – Syracuse ice hockey (14-15-3, 10-10-2 in Atlantic Hockey America) picked up a much needed 3-2 win at home to RIT (15-16-0, 10-12-0 in Atlantic Hockey America) last night. Today, it traveled around 90 miles to Rochester to wrap up the series, and fell 4-2.
The first period was similar to the story of yesterday’s game. The Tigers found the back of the net four minutes in, but the goal was chalked off. It was the second game in a row the officials ruled out one of RIT’s scores.
Rochester didn’t have to wait long for a goal to count. Two minutes later, the Tigers went to the power play. Linda Rulle tipped the puck off a shot from the blue line. The Orange did go on the power play themselves and had their best chance of the period, but went into the second down a goal.
SU would equalize around halfway through the second through an offensive zone face-off win where Jackson Kinsler wrapped around the net and had her initial shot blocked. Stella Costabile pounced on the loose puck to reverse what happened last night where RIT came back from a goal down.
Syracuse wasn’t done either, storming back from captain Nea Tervonen with four minutes left of the frame. A scrum in front of the net fell to the junior who fired it into the roof of the net, getting a goal on the power play. Speaking of power play, the Tigers tied things at two just before the period ended off an extra skater goal through Rulle for her second of the game. Everything was to play for heading into the third.
Echoing a similar story from last night, RIT scored around five minutes in to retake the lead through Tilli Keranen off a feed from Addie Alvarez. The Tigers kept the puck alive and this time the goal counted. They would also add an empty net goal as SU searched for an equalizer.
Syracuse wraps up AHA play for its last regular season series when it travels to face Mercyhurst (20-10-2, 16-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey America) on Friday to begin a two-game series. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. EST from Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, P.A. For coverage of the Orange’s next series and SU’s postseason, follow @CaitlinMcDono and @CitrusTVSports on X/Twitter!
