Chestnut Hill, Mass – Syracuse softball (14-17, 3-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) falls to Boston College (12-28, 3-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) 7-6 in a heartbreaking loss. SU was so close to sweeping the Eagles in back-to-back seasons.
After Boston College led 3-0 after the first three innings, the Orange scored one in the fourth on an RBI double from Kendall Gaunt, and one in the fifth on an RBI double by Peyton Schemmer. So, going to the final inning, SU trailed by one and was down to its final three outs.
In the seventh, the chaos started. SU scored four runs on four hits from Vanessa Flores, Kaylee Eubanks, and Lauren Fox. However, Boston College responded in a big way.
The Eagles started the inning with back-to-back doubles that scored a run, and made it 6-4. With the tying run coming up to the plate, Julianna Verni replaced Cano in the circle. Verni had pitched in the two games prior in the series and struck out 18 hitters across the 10 innings. But today was a different story.
The senior threw 12 straight balls, and three BC runners came across to score on errant pitches.
On the bright side, Syracuse won its first ACC series of the season.
Now, Syracuse turns its attention to a doubleheader against Colgate this Wednesday, with the first pitch of game one from Skytop Softball Stadium being at 3:00.
