Syracuse Men’s Soccer capitalized on nearly every opportunity to punish UConn 5-0 on Labor Day in an old Big East rivalry.

UConn started off on the front foot at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium, dominating the first ten minutes. In the 15th minute, Colin Biros completely shifted the momentum with the games opening goal. Noah Singlemann sent a cross into the box that Jeorgio Kocevski beautifully left for Biros to score his second goal of the season.

In the 29th minute, SU’s two biggest transfers linked up for goal number two. Levonte Johnson sparked a counterattack and fed a through ball in to Nathan Opoku who doubled the Orange lead. Lorenzo Boselli capitalized on a goalkeeper mistake off a corner kick just three minutes later to send SU into the halftime break up 3-0.

Syracuse sat back and defended for early parts of the second half, but key saves from Russell Shealy held the lead constant. In the 73rd minute, frustration boiled over for UConn midfielder Christos Charalambous who received a straight red card to send the Huskies down to ten men. Julius Rauch immediately made UConn pay with a goal less than a minute after the red card. Francesco Pagano decided to join in on the fun three minutes later with his first goal of the season. In the end, SU finished with its largest win over UConn in program history.

Syracuse improves to 3-0-1 with its first road victory of the season. The Orange have now registered three clean sheets across four games. Next up for SU is the ACC opener against Notre Dame on Saturday. The Irish come off an NCAA Tournament semifinal appearance. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
