Syracuse Cannot Finish Strong Start against Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey had three new starters on Friday after last week’s catastrophic performance against Colgate.

Syracuse (0-8, 0-0 College Hockey America) had a one-goal lead going into the third period before No. 6 Princeton (1-0, 0-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference) made a comeback, grabbing a 3-1 victory.

Savannah Rennie got the scoring started 11 minutes into the first period off a feed from Abby Moloughney. Both goalies played tremendous through the first two periods as SU’s Allison Small had 18 saves and Princeton’s Rachel McQuigge had 17.

Everything changed in the third period. The Tigers outshot SU 23-3 and exploded for three goals.

Syracuse had two penalties in the third period, and Princeton scored on both of their opportunities. Head coach Paul Flanagan saw how SU struggled on the power kill once again, making the difference in the game.

“We played hard and everyone contributed. We fell victim to their special teams and that was the difference, but we’ll regroup and get back at it tomorrow,” said Flanagan.

Despite this, Paul Flanagan was happy with how disciplined his team was, only giving up three penalties on Friday.

Syracuse now drops to 0-8, continuing the worst start in program history. The Orange will finish its first away series, playing the Tiger again tomorrow at noon.
