The odds were stacked against this #11 Orange team heading into today. No Chase Scanlan, Jacob Buttermore or Nick DiPietro on the road for the second matchup against #5 Virginia. Despite all of the obstacles, the Orange pulled out a huge win in Klockner Stadium to spoil Virginia’s senior day. Final score: Syracuse 13, Virginia 11.

It all started from the X. Jakob Phaup was unstoppable on faceoffs today against one of the best in the league, Petey LaSalla for UVA. Phaup went 24-of-27 on faceoffs against the Hoos, giving Syracuse endless offensive possessions and opportunities to get ahead throughout the game.

Everyone delivered for the Orange. Owen Seebold starting at attack today and finishing with two goals and two assists from some very timely plays to stop Virginia from making a comeback. Jamie Trimboli and Owen Hiltz both scored hat tricks as well, Stephen Rehfuss and Lucas Quinn adding two goals each and Brendan Curry one more.

Defensively, this team looked transformed from last week’s beat down against UNC. More aggressive on the matchups along with some zone defense to hold off the Hoos from making a run for it. Drake Porter also had nine saves in net.

Up next, Syracuse faces #2 Notre Dame on the road on May 1, looking for revenge after losing to the Irish in the Dome last month.
