Fifttheen ranked Syracuse field hockey got back on track today at Longwood, taking down the Lancers 4-0. The Orange were in desperate need of a win, after falling to second ranked North Carolina this past Friday 5-0. SU was led by four different goal scorers in the contest, and was never threatened in the match.

The Orange wasted no time putting Friday’s game in the rear view mirror, getting off to a hot start. In the first 15 minutes, Syracuse had five shots, while also having five attacking penalty corners. Those five corners were more than SU had the entire game versus UNC on Friday. Even though the Orange had all of those chances, they still didn’t find the back of the cage till the second quarter.

With Syracuse having as many chances as it did in the first quarter, it felt like it was only a matter of time till it broke though. Just under eight minutes into the second, Bo van Kempen would rocket home her fifth goal of the season off an attacking penalty corner chance. Van Kempen received the ball of the injection, passed it to Berber Bakermans, who gave it right back to van Kempen for the goal. Bakermans was credited with an assist on the tally. Then, with just two seconds left in the half, Vivian Rowan picked up a rebound off a save from Longwood goaltender Sophie Mooldijk and put it into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The goal marked Rowan’s third score of the season. Headed into the half, SU was in full control outshooting Longwood 11-2, and leading in corners 6-1.

In the third quarter, it was once again all Syracuse. Seven and a half minutes into the frame, Lieke Leeggangers rifled a shot past Mooldijk assisted by Willemijn Boogert to make it 3-0 off an attacking penalty corner. The goal was Leeggangers first of the year. SU would add one more before the final whistle. The Orange weren’t done there though. With just under nine minutes to go, Hattie Madden was set up perfectly by Bo van Kempen for her second goal of the year.

The win pushes SU to 5-2 on the year. Syracuse will look to keep the positive momentum on Friday against Wake Forest. The game marks the second ACC clash of the season for the Orange, who are currently 0-1 in conference play.
